Copy Shelter vs Carbon Copy Cloner

Where Carbon Copy Cloner is the better answer

• You want copies you can open in Finder. Its backups are ordinary files in a non-proprietary format, so any Mac can read them without the app or a password.
• One price for the whole household. A license is $49.99 once, for non-commercial use on all the computers in your household.
• Snapshots you can search and label. It keeps snapshots of earlier versions under retention rules you set, finds a file across them by name, and lets you tag and annotate a snapshot to keep it.
• Files that live only in the cloud. It downloads cloud-only files from iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and Box so they are part of the local backup.

Where Copy Shelter is the better answer

• Encrypted before it leaves your Mac, every time. Copy Shelter encrypts on your Mac with a key only you hold before it writes anywhere, so a lost drive shows nothing readable. Carbon Copy Cloner offers encryption as an option on the backup volume.
• Copies beyond the disk on your desk. The same backup can go to a drive, a NAS, a cloud folder you already have, an S3 compatible bucket such as Backblaze B2, or another Mac.
• A free way to start that never runs out. Free covers one backup location with no time limit, including encryption, checking and the whole restore. Carbon Copy Cloner has a 30 day trial.
• Your files back without us. The backup format is documented, and csctl, a free single file tool, restores from the folder and your passphrase.

Checking the copies

Both check what they wrote. Carbon Copy Cloner verifies files after copying and offers a scheduled Backup Health Check and checksum verification. Copy Shelter reads each copy back and compares it against its own hashes, and it never counts a copy it has not checked.

Price

Carbon Copy Cloner is $49.99 once for the household, and a new major version is up to 50% off for existing owners. Copy Shelter is free for one location. Pro is $4.99 a month, $39.99 a year with 7 free days first, or $79.99 once, and covers the Macs you own.

Using both

A reasonable setup for anything that matters: Carbon Copy Cloner for a plain copy on a disk at home, and Copy Shelter for an encrypted copy somewhere else. Two tools writing to two places fail for different reasons.

The question to ask any backup

Can you get a file back today, from the backup as it is now, on a Mac that has never seen it? Try it with one file before you need it.

Common questions

Is Copy Shelter a Carbon Copy Cloner alternative?

For some people. If you want a plain copy on a disk that opens in Finder, Carbon Copy Cloner does that well. If you want every copy encrypted with your key, checked, and kept in more than one kind of place, that is what Copy Shelter is for.

Which is cheaper?

For one household that wants a single paid app for years, Carbon Copy Cloner's $49.99 costs less than Copy Shelter Pro's $79.99 lifetime price. Copy Shelter Free costs nothing for one backup location, with no time limit.

Do I need a password to restore?

From Carbon Copy Cloner, only if you turned on encryption for the backup volume. From Copy Shelter, yes. Every backup is encrypted, and your passphrase or recovery key opens it, in the app or with the free csctl tool.

Does Carbon Copy Cloner have a free trial?

Yes, 30 days. Copy Shelter Free has no time limit for one location, and Pro's annual plan starts with 7 free days.
